Converting a colour PDF to grayscale or black and white online has never been easier. oMyPDF's Grayscale PDF tool uses Ghostscript — the industry-standard PDF engine — to strip colour data accurately. In Grayscale mode, smooth grey tones replace every colour while vectors and selectable text are fully preserved. In Black & White mode, pages are rasterised to a crisp 1-bit bilevel image: every pixel becomes either pure black or pure white, with no grey. This is the tool if you want to convert a colour PDF to black and white (not grayscale), print on a black and white printer without muddy results, change a PDF background to white, reduce file size, or prepare documents for archiving.

Grayscale PDF features
Grayscale or pure black & white
Two distinct modes: smooth grayscale (great for reading) or pure 1-bit black & white (great for printing and archiving).
Grayscale preserves text layer
In Grayscale mode, all vectors and selectable text are kept intact — only the colour data is stripped.
Perfect for printing
Colour PDFs printed on black & white printers look muddy. Converting first gives clean, consistent results and uses less ink.
Smaller files
Removing colour data significantly reduces file size, especially for image-heavy PDFs.
Security & privacy
Your files are processed securely on our servers over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection and deleted immediately after conversion. We never store, read, or share your documents.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between grayscale and black & white?
Grayscale keeps every shade of grey — light, mid and dark tones all become different shades between black and white, so the result looks like a traditional black & white photograph. Black & White (1-bit) is a hard binary conversion: every pixel is either pure black or pure white, with no shades of grey. It produces maximum contrast and the smallest file size, but fine details can be lost.
How do I convert a colour PDF to black and white?
Upload your PDF, choose your conversion mode (Grayscale or Black & White), and click Convert. The converted PDF downloads automatically — the whole process takes a few seconds.
Will the text still be selectable after conversion?
Yes — in Grayscale mode the text layer is fully preserved. In Black & White mode the pages are rasterised (converted to images) so text will not be selectable, but the visual content is retained at 300 DPI.
Can I convert a PDF to black and white without it looking grey?
Yes. Choose the "Black & White" mode. This uses a 1-bit bilevel conversion so there are no shades of grey — every pixel is fully black or fully white. This is what "convert PDF to black and white not grayscale" means.
Can I change the PDF background to white?
If your PDF has a coloured background, converting to Grayscale or Black & White will remap those colours to grey tones or white. For a pure white background, the Black & White mode is most effective as it snaps light backgrounds to white.
Is my file safe?
Your PDF is sent over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, converted immediately using Ghostscript on our server, and deleted right after. We never read or store your documents.
Is this free?
Yes. Converting a colour PDF to grayscale or black & white is completely free — no account, no watermark, no limit.
