What a signature on a PDF actually is
A signature placed here is a graphic drawn onto the page — your drawn strokes, your name set in a handwriting typeface, or an image you supply — positioned exactly where you put it and written into the document as page content. Once downloaded it is part of the page, not a sticker sitting on top of it, so it survives being emailed, printed, merged with other documents and opened in any viewer.
This is the electronic equivalent of signing a printed page, and for the overwhelming majority of everyday documents it is precisely what is wanted: a rental agreement, a consent form, a delivery note, a supplier contract, a school permission slip. It replaces the print-sign-scan ritual, which produces a worse document — a crooked, heavy, unsearchable photograph of what was previously a clean file.
What it does not do is prove anything cryptographically. The page shows that someone signed; it does not, by itself, demonstrate who or that nothing changed afterwards. That distinction matters for a small number of documents and for none of the rest, and knowing which you are handling is most of what there is to understand here.
Electronic signatures and the law
Electronic signatures are legally recognised across most of the world, and the major frameworks — the ESIGN Act and UETA in the United States, eIDAS across the European Union, and comparable legislation in the UK, Canada, Australia and India — are deliberately technology-neutral. They do not specify a format. What they look for is intent to sign, agreement to transact electronically, and a record that associates the signature with the document.
In practice that means a signature like this one is enforceable for ordinary commercial and personal agreements, and disputes about them are far more often about whether a person agreed than about how the mark was made. Keeping the surrounding evidence — the email thread, the timestamps, the file as sent — is worth more than any property of the signature itself.
The exceptions are narrow and consistent between jurisdictions: wills and testamentary documents, some property conveyances, certain court filings and family-law instruments, and anything a specific regulator has said must be wet-signed or certificate-signed. If your document is in that group, or the value at stake makes the question worth asking, get local advice rather than relying on a general rule.
When you need a certificate-based digital signature instead
A digital signature is a different mechanism entirely. It computes a cryptographic hash of the document and encrypts it with a private key issued to you by a certificate authority, embedding the result in the file. Any viewer can then verify two things independently: that the document has not changed by a single byte since signing, and that the signature came from the key holder the certificate identifies.
That tamper-evidence is what regulated contexts require. Tax filings, tenders, court submissions, qualified signatures under eIDAS and many pharmaceutical and financial processes all mandate it, and no visible-image signature will satisfy them regardless of how it looks. Obtaining one means going to a certificate authority and proving your identity, which is the point — the trust comes from that verification, not from the software.
For everything else the visible signature is not a compromise, it is the appropriate tool. Most agreements have never had tamper-evidence, since a wet signature on paper offers none either.
Making the signed document look right
Size and placement do most of the work. A signature should sit on the signature line rather than floating near it, and should be roughly the height of two lines of body text — signatures scaled up to a quarter of the page are the commonest giveaway that a document was signed in a hurry. Adding the date beside it, at body-text size, finishes the block properly.
If you are uploading a signature image, a transparent PNG is worth the two minutes it takes to prepare. A JPG carries its white background with it, and dropping a white rectangle onto a form covers the line it was meant to sit on and any text nearby. Drawing works best on a touchscreen; a mouse-drawn signature rarely resembles the one on your passport.
When the document is finished and going somewhere important, consider what happens next to it. Protect PDF can disable copying and extraction, which raises the effort needed to lift the signature image out for reuse, and Compress PDF is worth a pass if you have added a large signature photograph to an otherwise light document.

Private & instant

Security & privacy
Your signature is a specimen of something you use to bind yourself legally, so treating it as an ordinary upload would be wrong. For normal documents it is not uploaded at all: the strokes you draw, the image you choose and the PDF itself are combined by code running in your browser tab, and nothing is transmitted. The signature is not stored between visits either — there is no library of customer signatures here to leak. Documents large enough to need server processing travel over an encrypted connection, are signed in an isolated working directory, and both the file and the signature image are erased within the hour.
Frequently asked questions
Is the oMyPDF sign tool free?
Yes. Signing PDFs is free, with no watermark and no sign-up required — on files up to 100 MB.
How do I create my signature?
Choose Draw to sign with your mouse or finger, Type to write your name in a handwriting font, or Upload to use a signature image (a transparent PNG works best). You can place the same signature on multiple pages.
Can I add text or a date?
Yes. Besides your signature, you can drop in custom text fields and today's date, then drag and resize each one.
Is this a legally binding e-signature?
It adds a visible signature image to the document, which is widely accepted for everyday agreements. For regulated or certificate-based digital signatures, use a dedicated e-signature provider.
Are my files safe?
Smaller PDFs are signed entirely in your browser and never leave your device. Larger files are sent over an encrypted connection, processed immediately, and deleted right after.
Is an electronic signature legally valid?
In most of the world, yes for ordinary agreements. Frameworks such as the US ESIGN Act, the EU's eIDAS regulation and the UK's Electronic Communications Act all treat electronic signatures as valid, and none of them require a particular technology. What matters legally is intent to sign, consent to do so electronically, and a record connecting the signature to the document — not whether ink was involved. A handful of document types are carved out almost everywhere: wills, some property transfers, and certain court and family-law filings. Check locally if the document is one of those, or if it is high value.
What is the difference between an electronic and a digital signature?
An electronic signature is any mark made with intent to sign — including the one this tool places. A digital signature is a specific cryptographic technique that binds a certificate to the file, so a viewer can prove the document has not been altered since signing and confirm who holds the certificate. This tool produces the first, which covers everyday agreements. Regulated filings and anything needing tamper-evidence want the second, from a certificate-issuing provider.
Can the signature be removed or reused by someone else?
A visible signature is drawn onto the page, so it is as extractable as any other image on any PDF — someone could crop it out and reuse it. This is true of every scanned signature and of paper documents photographed and emailed, and it is the main practical argument for a certificate-based signature on anything high-stakes. Flattening the document and applying Protect PDF with copying disabled raises the effort required.
How do I get a clean signature image?
Sign a blank white sheet with a dark pen, photograph it in good light, then crop tightly and remove the white background so you have a transparent PNG. A signature with its white box intact will cover whatever it is placed over, which looks wrong on a form line. Drawing directly is easier on a touchscreen with a finger or stylus than with a mouse — most mouse-drawn signatures look nothing like the signer's real one.
Can I sign on every page?
Yes. Place the signature, then add it again wherever it is needed — initials at the foot of each page of a contract are a common requirement, and each placement can be sized independently. Page numbers and dates can be added the same way.
Can I send this to someone else to sign?
This tool signs a document you have; it does not manage a signing workflow with invitations, reminders and an audit trail. For a countersigned agreement, sign your part, send the file, and let the other party add theirs — or use a dedicated e-signature service if you need the audit trail for compliance.
Can I sign a password-protected PDF?
Not while it is encrypted, since the pages cannot be read to place anything on them. Remove the protection with Unlock PDF, sign, then re-apply it with Protect PDF.
