Protect PDF features
256-bit AES encryption
Bank-grade encryption locks your PDF behind a password so only the right people can open it.
Granular permissions
Allow or block printing, copying, editing, annotations, form-filling and page assembly.
Private & instant
Smaller files are encrypted right in your browser; larger ones use secure server processing and are deleted right after.
Security & privacy
Your files stay private. PDFs under 15 MB are encrypted entirely in your browser — no upload required. Larger files are sent over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, protected immediately, and permanently deleted from our servers. We never store, read, or share your documents.
Frequently asked questions
Is the oMyPDF protect tool free?
Yes. Adding a password and permissions to your PDF is 100% free with no sign-up required.
What's the difference between the user and owner password?
The user (open) password is required to open the PDF and is subject to the permissions you set. The owner password unlocks full access and bypasses those restrictions. If you don't set a separate owner password, it matches the open password.
How strong is the encryption?
PDFs are encrypted with 256-bit AES — the same standard used for sensitive documents in business and government.
Can I stop people from copying or printing my PDF?
Yes. Turn off 'Copy text & images' to block copying, and set Printing to 'Not allowed' (or 'Low resolution') to restrict printing.
Are my files safe?
PDFs under 15 MB are encrypted entirely in your browser and never leave your device. Larger files are sent over an encrypted connection, processed immediately, and deleted right after.
