Checking two versions of a contract
In contracts, quotes and policies a single changed sentence can matter more than the rest of the document. The comparison marks every difference in place on both pages, so you no longer read the two versions side by side, paragraph by paragraph, hoping to catch it.
Previous change and Next change step through the differences in order, so none is skipped, and the change list shows each added, removed and changed word in its context. For a redline you received from the other side, it is the quickest way to confirm that only the agreed edits were made.
Word documents and mixed pairs
You can compare PDF with PDF, Word with Word, or a PDF with a .docx file. The mixed pair is the case people meet most often: you wrote the Word version, and what came back is a signed or exported PDF.
Word files are converted to PDF first, with the page breaks and list numbering Word itself would print, and then both documents are compared as one continuous stream of text. That is why an extra paragraph near the start does not make every later page look changed.
Recognising moved text instead of reporting it twice
When a paragraph is only moved to another place, a simple comparison reports it twice: once as deleted and once as added. That doubles the change list and buries the edits that actually changed the meaning.
With the Moves option switched on, oMyPDF recognises the relocated passage and marks it in its own colour on both sides. The change list gets shorter and more honest, and a reviewer can see at a glance that a clause moved rather than disappeared.

Where are my files processed?
On our server. The comparison engine extracts the text from both documents, aligns them word by word, OCRs any scanned pages and compares images pixel by pixel — work no browser can do well. Both files and the results are deleted automatically within an hour. Your browser only draws the pages and the highlights.
What do the highlight colours mean?
On the side-by-side view, text that only appears in the original is highlighted red (removed) on the left, and text that only appears in the revised file is highlighted blue (added) on the right.
Which Word formats are supported?
Modern Word .docx files are supported. Older .doc files should be saved as .docx (or exported to PDF) first.
Can it compare scanned PDFs?
Yes. Pages with no text layer are read automatically with OCR, so scanned documents are compared word by word like any other. Comparison is only as good as the recognition, so a clean scan gives noticeably more reliable results than a skewed or low-resolution one.
What if the two files have a different number of pages?
Extra pages are detected automatically — pages that exist only in the original are flagged as deleted, and pages that exist only in the revised file are flagged as new.
How do I compare two Word documents for differences?
Drop the original .docx into slot A and the revised one into slot B, then click Compare documents. Both files are converted with Word's own page layout and compared word by word, and the differences are highlighted side by side with a change list. There is no need to open Word's Review tab or to save either file as a PDF first.
